Screen Media Films has acquired Thomas Johnston’s “Fifty Nothing” and will release the adult comedy in November under the new title “About Fifty.”
Described as a coming-of-age story about the coming of age, pic stars Wendie Malick (“Hot in Cleveland”), as well as Martin Grey Gottlieb and Drew Pillsbury, both of whom co-wrote the script. Duo play longtime golf buddies who trek to Palm Springs for a weekend to let loose and relive their youth. Struggling to fit in with the younger crowd, they find comfort with women closer to their own age, but as the weekend progressed, both are forced to face mid-life predicaments.

“Glee” thesp Jessalyn Gilsig co-stars alongside Anne-Marie Johnson (“JAG”), Steve Hytner (“Hung”) and Michaela McManus (NBC’s “Awake”), who makes her feature film debut.

“About Fifty” will be the opening night film of the Fort Lauderdale Film Festival, which runs from Oct. 21 to Nov. 12. Fest will serve as the launch for the film’s theatrical release in south Florida. Pic was shot on location in Palm Springs and debuted at the 2011 Palm Springs Film Fest.

“What a pleasure to be working with Thomas Johnston and his team on this funny and insightful film directed at the ’30-somethings’ who are now the ’50-somethings,’” said Screen Media prexy Suzanne Blech.

“We have seen firsthand just how well this film plays to its target audience and we are excited to be working with Suzanne Blech and the team at Screen Media,” said exec producer Melanie Becker. “We feel this is the perfect company to get the film to its audience.”

Repped by Becker, the deal was brokered with Blech, Screen Media Ventures exec VP David T. Fannon and attorney Robert L. Seigel of Cowan DeBaets Abrahams & Sheppard.

An overly earnest musician (Daniel Eric Gold) harbors a crush on his pretty co-barista (Jennifer Love Hewitt) who’s dating an abusive jerk (Gavin Bellour); a married man (Derek Cecil) gets to know an attractive blond (Michaela McManus) he met at the movies; a forthright social worker (Cecelia Ann Birt) grills potential staffers; a genial cop (Clayton Prince) monitors his drug-addicted cousin (Garrett Hendricks) who’s in debt to a callous dealer (Jamie Kennedy); and a husky loner (Hubbel Palmer) explores the possibility that he’s an avatar living in a virtual world (huh?) created by a brainy young girl (Madeline Carroll).

It looks like NBC has placed Awake on the schedule for mid-season. Here’s a video preview with a shot sighting of Michaela!

‘AWAKE’ — “Awake” is an intriguing drama about a detective (Jason Issacs, “Harry Potter,” “Brotherhood”) who finds he is leading an arduous double life that defies reality. When Detective Michael Britten (Issacs) regains consciousness following his family’s car accident, he is told that his wife Hannah (Laura Allen, “Terriers”) perished but that his teen son, Rex (Dylan Minnette, “Saving Grace”), has survived. As he tries to put the pieces of his life back together, he awakens again in a parallel reality in which his wife is very much alive — but his son Rex died in the accident. In order to keep both of his loved ones alive at one time, he begins living two dueling realities in parallel worlds, which churns up confusion — in one moment, Michael and his wife debate about having another child to replace their son, while in the other reality, he is attracted to his son’s tennis coach, Tara (Michaela McManus, “The Vampire Diaries”), to fill the void from the loss of his wife. Trying to regain some normalcy, Michael returns to police work and solves crimes in both worlds with the help of two different partners — Detective Isaiah “Bird” Freeman (Steve Harris, “The Practice”) and Detective Efrem Vega (Wilmer Valderrama, “That ’70s Show”). Also starring are Emmy Award winner Cherry Jones (“24”) and BD Wong (NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”) as therapists in each respective world. The series is produced by 20th Century Fox Television. Kyle Killen (“Lone Star”) and Howard Gordon (“24”) are executive producers. David Slade (“Twilight: Eclipse,” “30 Days of Night”) also serves as executive producer and directed the pilot written by Killen.

NBC just kicked off its second day of pickups with orders to Kyle Killen’s Inception-style Awake (form. REM) and Chad Hodge’s 1960s The Playboy Club. Both hail from 20th Century Fox TV and have been widely expected to get the nod. NBC seems to be going studio by studio, starting off with UMS’ Whitney, Up All Night, Prime Suspect and Smash yesterday, now adding 20th TV’s Awake and Playboy. NBC also just picked up another UMS pilot, the fairytale-themed Grimm, which didn’t make the cut yesterday but remained in contention.

The Vampire Diaries’ next full moon promises to be a big one, and TVLine has learned that Michaela McManus’ Jules won’t be missing out on all the fun.

Sources close to VD confirm to TVLine exclusively that Tyler’s (Michael Trevino) werewolf pal will resurface in Mystic Falls at some point before the end of the season. No word on how long she’ll stick around this time, but we’re told Jules’ reappearance will coincide with the town’s next full moon.

Last we saw Jules, she was leaving Mystic Falls with Tyler under the guise of helping him learning the ins and outs of his wolfy powers. And since Trevino confirmed at last weekend’s C2E2 event in Chicago that he was finally back on the show’s Atlanta set after a lengthy hiatus — and shooting night scenes, to boot! — it’s safe to assume the two will make their way home together.

Happy Jules — hopefully minus her wolf pack — is headed back to Mystic Falls? Hit the comments! Don’t miss The Vampire Diaries‘ return Thursday, April 7 at 8/7c

A week ago, Terries co-star Laura Allen got good news when she was cast in a supporting role on NBC’s drama pilot REM. Today, she got an even better news – in a pilot rarity, she was just bumped up to female lead of the project opposite Jason Isaacs. Meanwhile, Law & Order: SVU alumna Michaela McManus, who tested opposite Allen for the supporting role of Tara, has now been cast in that role.
